rainbow rice

Last week we had a visit from our cousin, Hazel, and her Mommy. To prepare for this special day we got busy coming up with a fun craft to do with Hazel. If you haven't dyed rice or pasta yet, you have to try it sometime...it's so easy! I scooped 1/2 cup of rice into each baggie, a drop of food coloring and 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol. Have the kids squeeze it around and then let the rice dry overnight. I love any chance I can get to have the kids play with a "color wheel".

Next the kids gathered colorful stuff from around the house

When Hazel came they dropped the found objects in their bottles and we filled the bottles about 3/4 full with rainbow rice. As an extra precaution, we super glued the lids on.

Eye Spy bottles! My kids have been playing with theirs at night after story time when they are in bed. If you want more great ideas visit here and here, where I found the inspiration for these bottles and rice. :) Happy creating!

Very cute idea!! I've been thinking about making one of these lately, and I really like the way that yours turned out. This even seems like something I could do with Kye.

Awesome idea! I've always wanted to make some of those. Love that you glued the top on. Probably a really good idea.

I bet the cousins love to come and visit your house, with fun crafts like that. :) I tried coloring rice once, but I didn't know about using the rubbing alcohol....that must be the important step I left out.

My oldest daughter's Girl Scout Troop had to make swaps for day camp this year - they dyed rice and made little teeny bags with ten or so grains in each and labeled them "Rainbow Seeds."

I love the idea of hiding rainbow items from around the house in the bottles - great project!
