school projects

As part of Havah's home school this year we are learning about many different ancient civilizations. Currently we are studying ancient Egypt from 1500-500 BC. One of the fascinating things that grabbed Havalah's attention was the Egyptian's invention to tell time. It was called a "water clock". The position of water in a large clay crock would tell them what time of day it was. Here is Havah's own version: Every 60 seconds, she would make a black dot. When the cup was drained she could count the dots and figure out how much time had passed.

patiently waiting for the cup to drain...

One of Henry's favorite things to do is give us directions on how to get somewhere. Example, if we are going to Target he'll tell me where to turn left, right etc. So when my friend, Kristi, mentioned that she was doing a map project with her home schooled pre-schooler I immediately wrote it into my lesson plans (I'm such a copy cat!!). Havalah decided to give it a try too and they both ended up making really detailed maps of our town.

Since this project, Havah is planning out her maps for a few other cities that she is familiar with, as well as the place where we are going on vacation in a few months. Thanks for the great idea, Kristi!

Such fun projects! I'm going to be working on map making with Grace again in a couple of weeks. Your kids made such great maps. If you're interested in this topic, there's a book that I love called Mapmaking with Childen by David Sobel that you might like.

Your roads/maps look great! I'm so glad you all had fun. Is Henry driving his cars on them? Eli spent one whole afternoon zooming around his roads with his match box cars. I saw an idea the other day where a mom took a large white shower curtain and did the same thing. Then they had a giant road map on their floor to play on.
