homemade shrinky dinks

ok, so I've seen people making homemade shrinky dinks on blogs all over the place. Mommy blogs love this, kids' art blogs love them, and of course, recycling blogs love this project too! Since as a kid I spent a good percentage of my young days working on traditional shrinky dinks I thought this was something we really needed to try. :)
If you want to try it hold onto your plastic containers - the ones that blueberries, strawberries or if you shop at Costco, the giant ones that the grapes come in. (I think the plastic is either #1 or #6) After we cut them into pieces we colored on the plastic with permanent markers. Then we baked them at 300 degrees for about 20 seconds. They turned out really, really cute! It was one of those projects that my kids would either do for 5 minutes or two hours. Fortunately, they enjoyed working on them for about an hour. Nice. In retrospect, I wish I would've thought to cut the plastic into circles. The squares were sharp and had to be trimmed. Lastly, we punched holes in them and tomorrow I think we'll hang them from yarn and make necklaces.
Happy playing!

I had forgotten about shrink dinks! I must pull them out and put the leftover supplies to good use! If not, I'm going to try this!!!
