We had our first day of Classical Conversations (CC) co-op yesterday. While WONDERFUL to be reunited with our friends, if I'm being honest, it was just a wee bit hard to jump back in. It takes me a little while to let go of summer (no schedule!) and remember how learning together and the wonderful discussions that we have during school day (and after school) are what it's all about. The mission statement of CC is to teach our children "to know God and make Him known." We are teaching them why we believe what we believe and how to defend that belief when the time comes.
A quick run down of their subjects for the year:
Havalah (grade 9):
Algebra 2
Current Events
Debate
Intermediate and Advanced Logic
Exposition and Composition
Astronomy and Chemistry
Latin
Henry (grade 7):
Pre-Algebra
Science: Earth and Body Systems
Latin
Rhetoric
Exposition and Comp
Geography
I've had a few people ask me how CC works. Is it a drop off program? Why do we only go once a week? I could talk about CC for hours, but in a nutshell, CC day is our "community day." It is not a drop off program. The kids are grouped by age/grade level. It's entirely parent led. On our community day, the tutor (another mom, or sometimes dad) introduces the subjects, one by one, that the child will do for assignments during the week. (The child's parent does all the grading of the assignments.) That tutor is one, or a hundred steps ahead of the rest of us, so we can ask questions about the subjects. How amazing is this?? It brings tears to my eyes at how much work these moms put into tutoring CC. Twice a year they administer a Blue Book exam, that we (the parents) grade at home.
It is my greatest privilege to teach and learn alongside my children. And I'm so thankful for the other homeschooling moms, turned friends, that share our hearts' desire.
Looking forward to a great 2017-2018 school year! :)
