new school year - 2010-2011

We have officially settled into our new school routine, and it feels good. Our loads are heavier, with lessons taking the majority of the day, but the kids are excited and so am I. The days are full and happy!

Havalah is in 3rd grade, Henry is in kindergarten!

Havalah about knocked me off my chair today when she asked if she could "do a little extra writing, if that's okay." Um, yeah. That's no problem. (Here's me, jumping up and down!)

Along with learning at home, we've joined a new to us co-op, along with some friends. We are feeling really blessed to be apart of this group. It has over 120 families and is the largest and most organized co-op I've ever seen.

Havalah will be taking Latin and piano and Henry will begin Spanish 1 and Creation Science. This is the first co-op that we've been a part of that, for one of the hours during the day, I get to sit and visit with others instead of facilitating or teaching a class. A nice benefit.

Henry, in the middle of a Noah's Ark project. This is what our kitchen table looks like every. single. day. Just keepin' it real, yo.
Henry loves math. He continues to amaze us with the quick calculations he does in his head. Yesterday, as we were driving he asked me how long it would take to drive 3 miles. I answered, about 5 minutes. Without missing a beat he said, so it would take 10 minutes to go 6 miles, 15 minutes to go 9 miles and 20 minutes to go 12 miles?
So...I think we are going to move our math curriculum right along and then start something else, not sure what, yet, in January.

I love to start each school year with a unit on how God made us all so special and unique. I think we all need to be reminded of this, but especially children. This is a great time to reinforce how special we are in his eyes.
(pretend this pic is flipped - blogger was giving me trouble)

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

Needless to say, we are excited for a fresh, new, wonderful school year. It is a blessing and opportunity for us to teach our children at home, one that we do not take lightly.

Here is what we are using this year (click on each subject to be redirected for more info). Not included in this list is 3rd Grade Science, and kindergarten art, since I am taking those subjects from so many different sources.

Havalah
History and Geography
Reading
Language Arts
Handwriting
Bible
Art
Spelling
Math
poetry
Latin - co-op taught, but when I find out what books are used, I'll share them here.

Henry
Reading and Language Arts
Math
Bible
Art
Science - co-op taught
Spanish - co-op taught
Here are a few videos of Henry. The first one is last week's Bible verse. Taken from Ephesians 6:1. He kept getting a few of the words mixed up, but I finally just let it go. :) Life's too short. The other is just a fun little flip book he made about the 7 days of Creation. Please do your best to ignore my annoying voice and listen to how cute Henry's voice is. Thank you.

I love that pile of books Havalah is holding...so many good ones in there. Henry is a little math whiz! And how cool that you have a little bird to help with math. It sounds like you are off to a great start. My dining room table looks like yours, but it's all my art stuff!

Hooray for a great start! So wish I had that co-op nearby--wow! What a lot of families. We just joined a PE co-op so feeling better now about all of us just seeing each other's faces everyday. School is going wonderful here, too. The tutors are making the world of difference for me and the kids.

Love your idea about reminding the kids how wonderfully unique and special we are made. So far the kids are loving their Bible class we do first thing in the morning. Focusing on Bible study. Have your kids learned the books of the Bible yet? I made drawings of the books and made memory cards. It's working well since the 3-year-old is picking it up fast! :) Let me know if you want a copy.

Congrats to Henry for his math skills and Havalah for her enthusiasm and writing skills. It only means one thing...there is one special Mama doing an amazing job! And two just plain smart kids, too! :)
