We planned a little scavenger hunt for the kids last week. To begin, Jon made a map of our backyard with an "X" marking the spot where they would find their first clue. Easy peasy (as Henry would say). Sorry for the terrible photos, it's hard enough to keep up with two excited kids as they make their way through the house looking for clues, but photographing the whole things became downright impossible.
Let's begin!

"
Daddy and Mommy have a surprise for you. To find it out, your must follow the clues. Daddy just fixed this in Henry's room, give it a pull and down it will zoom."
(Henry's window shade)

"
If to the top of these dark stairs you climb, your next clue you will find."
(the dark basement-outdoor stairs)

"
Since she can easily see a lot, sitting here is Bella's favorite spot."
(the top of the couch)

"
Next you'll have to check his head - 'I come in peace' is what he said."
(Buzz Lightyear)

"
Eating mushrooms is better than dirty socks, but if you bite this mushroom, you'll get a shock."
(Havalah's electric mushroom nightlight)

"
You're doing great, now another tip. You often get a new one of these before taking a trip."
(new toothbrush)

"
Luge bowl, golf or ski, you must use these to play the Wii."
(in the Wii storage box/ottoman)

"
After time in all these rooms, it's time to look to your costumes."
(in the costume trunk)

"
Nearer and closer to finding your fate, you'll find this where you check your weight."
(bathroom scale)

"
Don't press 'eject' you must only press 'play'. Then you'll know where we're going in 32 days."
(DVD player)
Did you figure it out? If not, then line up the first letter of every clue...or just look below ;)

"Are we
really going to Disneyland? On my birthday?? Eek!!"

"What? They sell Legos there? I'm in."
And as you probably guessed from our elaborate scheme to tell the kids, we just happen to be pretty darn excited ourselves.

How exciting! That was such a fun way to tell your kids. Good job writing the clues...those were great. :)
What? You are going to Disneyland? I can't believe you didn't tell me! How fun!!! Did I tell you that Brian won an all expense trip for 4 there? We are going (probably) in November.
What? You WON a trip??? How awesome is that? I didn't know that really happened to anyone! Very cool.
Well, the truth is that the trip is for some race car thing down there...but since we aren't into racing we are going to disneyland. the trip includes air, car and hotel. ibm has discounts for disney tickets so it will really cost us only food.
Awesome! We're planning a trip in October. We're headed to a family wedding in AZ and, since we'll be in the area (haha) thought we'd sneak over to Disney. We're gonna play my favorite joke, though, and tell them we're going to the zoo or something, and then later break it to them that we can't go. And at about the point the tears start falling, we'll tell them the truth. We're going to Disney!!!! And they'll freak and it will be great.
Delena, you never fail me...you are hilarious! be sure and blog about that one!
I love treasure hunts like that! I haven't ever been clever enough to make them all rhyme like you, though! We did one this year for Seth's 13th birthday gift... it was all over, inside and outside, of my parents' house, with 13 clues. I decided he wasn't too old for it yet, and I think he loved it! It's a great thing for birthday parties, too, with prizes or goody bags for all at the end. What a wonderfully fun way to tell you kids about the Disney trip! I think they will always remember it. :-)
Thanks Lynne! Jon was the pure genius behind those rhymes! He's hip like that. :)
Amazing!!! I LOVE this! I've missed your blog and blogging in general...trying to stay above water :) Glad to be back...thanks for warming my heart, Disneyland is MY FAVORITE!!
:) YAY!!!
How AWESOME!!! I am so excited for ya'll!!!
T came home this week and informed me that when the kids at preschool have a birthday, they all go to Disneyland. If he sees this he'll REALLY he's going to be going on his 5th birthday in June!! ;)
This looks like such fun! For both of you, too! Thanks for sharing that event. lovema.
