We made these trees by blowing the paint around with a straw. The kids were completely surprised at how much fun this was (once they figured out not to accidentally inhale)! It was a fitting project to go with our daily poetry. Remember this classic poem?
Trees
I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
-Joyce Kilmer
After we studied this poem, Havalah mentioned that she liked the line: "...and lifts her leafy arms to pray". That's a powerful thought isn't it?

The poem is beautiful, and so are the paintings. I hadn't read that poem before...I love it, and I'll probably be thinking about those words all day.
Great craft! The black is striking against the background. I saw a series of three tree prints in a catalog that said, "Breathe deeply, Stand tall, Look up." I liked that. Ok - on to trying to remove the bathroom wallpaper. Sigh... oh, and I love the new picture of the kids at the top of the blog too!
wow, we read this poem last week, too!! doesn't it have imagery that is simple and beautiful to a child's mind? love it.
okay, i must be art challenged....eli and i tried to do this today and it did not work for us! can you email me how you did it so that i can see where i went wrong?
I just did a search and for the life of me can't find where I found this project. Basically, we did the background colors first, let them dry overnight and then poured a small line of watery black paint near the bottom of the page. It took a while for Henry to blow his tree, and he took a lot of "breaks". :)
